Sex Chromosomes and Sex Determination in Dioecious Agricultural Plants

نویسندگان

چکیده

Unlike in animals, dioecy among flowering plants is a rare phenomenon. The vast majority of angiosperm species have bisexual flower that combines male (androecium) and female (gynoecium) reproductive organs. However, about quarter dioecious flowers, which can be located within the same plant (monoecious) or on different (dioecious). formation determined by various genetic mechanisms. They become more complex from work single gene to functioning full-fledged heteromorphic sex chromosomes, directly affect differentiation participate balance determination (where organs depends ratio X chromosomes autosomes, for example). In recent years, development sequencing techniques, bioinformatics, molecular biology has led an increase interest mechanisms plants. It noteworthy significant number economic value. At time, dioeciousness often complicates growing process. This fact increases relevance studies crops. this review, we attempt summarize current information plants, concentrating with agricultural importance.

Sex Determination in Monoecious and Dioecious Plants.

Angiosperm species that produce unisexual flowers present the opportunity for separate analysis of the male and female programs for floral differentiation and gametogenesis. A vast literature describes the genetic and physiological basis of sex determination in these species. (For reviews, see Westergaard, 1958; Grant, 1975; Frankel and Galun, 1977; Durand and Durand, 1984.) Recently, it has be...

Theory for why dioecious plants have equal length sex chromosomes.

Dioecy and sex chromosomes almost certainly evolved from ancestral hermaphrodites that only possessed autosomes. There is a growing body of evidence that genes for female or male function were then epigenetically suppressed in some of these hermaphrodites, creating the first males or females and nascent sex chromosomes. The incipient sex-determining epigenetic signals, such as cytosine methylat...

Methods of Sex Determination in Dioecious Angiospermous Plants

Angiosperms are the most diverse group of land plants which provides fruits, food, seed for cultivation and material for hybridization purpose etc. Approximately 90% of all angiosperm species have hermaphrodite (bisexual) flowers and the remaining, onetenth are either monoecious (male and female flowers are separate but grow in same plant) or dioecious (male and female flower grow on different ...

A sex-linked SCAR marker in Bryonia dioica (Cucurbitaceae), a dioecious species with XY sex-determination and homomorphic sex chromosomes.

Genetic crosses between the dioecious Bryonia dioica (Cucurbitaceae) and the monoecious B. alba in 1903 provided the first clear evidence for Mendelian inheritance of dioecy and made B. dioica the first organism for which XY sex-determination was experimentally proven. Applying molecular tools to this system, we developed a sex-linked sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker for B....

Sex chromosomes, sex determination, and sex-linked sequences in Microtidae.

The Arvicolidae is a widely distributed rodent group with several interesting characteristics in their sex chromosomes. Here, we summarize the actual knowledge of some of these characteristics. This mammalian group has species with abnormal sex determination systems. In fact, some species present the same karyotype in both males and females, with total absence of a Y chromosome, and hence of SR...
